Inspection Report - 01/26/2020

OVERVIEW

This inspection was to add winter feeding to the bees and to do an oxalic acid treatment for mites. Please note that the weather was very windy and ended up blowing over my video camera while filming the inspection. You will see that at the end of the video.

COLONY 1 - West Facing

This inspection was to do several items:

  1. Do a winter mite treatment

  2. Add fondant (sugar) feed to the colony

  3. Wrap the bottom of the hive for winter protection

Winter Mite Treatment

I did an oxalic acid treatment, which was the first one done this year for the eradication of mites that have been growing inside the hive. Mites are normal and expected, but keeping their numbers in check is the goal. We will never be rid of them but keeping overall numbers down is the goal.

Add Fondant Feed To Colony

Adding sugar fondant to the colony gives them a boost of an energy source. This will be an ongoing task until natural nectar sources are available again.

Wrap Bottom of the Hive for Protection

I wrapped part of the hive on the last inspection, but did not have enough materials at the time. The wrapping of the bottom of the hive protect from wind gusts that may impact the bees.

Recommendation: Monitor hive weight and ensure feeding of fondant continues.
